Travel Works Up an Appetite, According to TripAdvisor Survey

Dining out is a must when traveling, but did you know that more than half of U.S. travelers dine out 10 or more times during a typical one-week trip? And if you seek out deep dish pizza in Chicago or pasta carbonara in Rome you’re not alone, 83% make it a point to experience a destination’s famed dish. These are just a couple of the results from the 2013 TripAdvisor dining out survey of more than 1,600 respondents.

 

Among other results, American cuisine is top choice, according to a quarter of travelers in the survey, followed by Italian (19%), Mediterranean (7%), Mexican (7%), and French (4%). And most use many different resources to get recommendations on where to eat:

 

  • 77% read online reviews
  • 66% ask local residents
  • 56% ask the concierge/hotel staff
  • 44% ask family or friends

 

But while they do the research ahead of time, most say they don’t make reservations, instead preferring to be more spontaneous when the time comes. And when they do sit down, they don’t pick the healthy choices – 67% use vacation as a time to indulge in less healthy food. And casual dining is the choice setting, followed by waterfront, bistros or cafés, al fresco, and fine dining.

 

When asked what annoys them most about a dining experience, 56% noted slow or poor service and 22% said nothing annoys them about dining out when on vacation. A full 66% percent have gone so far as to send a meal back to the kitchen.

 

And finally, if you look for a deal on your meal, you’re not alone. More than half say discounts sway their decision on where to dine and most travelers choose options that are in the $10-$25 range, while only 6% will eat somewhere that costs $40 or more per person.

  1. Not only do I love to try local dishes but I generally try to experience ‘local-takes’ on popular cuisine. Say, Japanese Cuisine in Sri Lanka includes curry-leaf tempura.

    Tips: keep lunch light – probably at a tiny cafe where you can also sit and observe the culture through the hustle and bustle of the day. Then at night – splurge on somewhere fancy with gorgeous food, ambiance and service.
