TripAdvisor 2014 Thanksgiving Travel Survey

With millions of Americans preparing for their Turkey Day trips, we want to share the results of the annual TripAdvisor Thanksgiving travel survey which reveals that 43% plan to travel for Thanksgiving this year, up from 36% who said they traveled for the holiday in 2013.


More Plan to Drive in 2014

  • Of those traveling for Thanksgiving, 60% will drive to their destination while more than one-third (35%) will fly. Last year, 57% said they were planning to drive and 37% expected to fly
  • 60% of those driving will be traveling more than 200 miles to their destination, a 9% increase from those who planned to drive that far in 2013. 200 miles is roughly a 3.5 hour highway journey
  • Of those making domestic trips, 74% will be crossing state borders to reach their Thanksgiving destination, while 14% plan to cross the U.S. border for international trips


US Travelers Getting Early Jump on Thanksgiving Travel

Below is a breakdown of the most popular days for travelers to depart for and return from their Thanksgiving trips:

Sixty-three percent of travelers plan to travel at off-peak hours to avoid the holiday traffic.

Below are the top U.S. destinations for the Thanksgiving travel, according to TripAdvisor site search data for trips beginning between November 22 – November 27, 2014:

  1. New York City, New York
  2. Las Vegas, Nevada
  3. Orlando, Florida
  4. San Francisco, California
  5. Chicago, Illinois
  6. New Orleans, Louisiana
  7. San Diego, California
  8. Gatlinburg, Tennessee
  9. Key West, Florida
  10. Los Angeles, California



Turkey Day Spending

  • 41% of respondents plan to spend more on their Thanksgiving trips this year compared to last, while 46% plan to spend about the same, and 12% plan to spend less
  • The majority (61%) of those traveling plan to spend under $1,000 on their trips; 38% will spend less than $500, while 12% will spend more than $3,000
  • 88% of respondents said they’re planning a trip to partake in Thanksgiving shopping deals. Of the group:
    • 61% plan to shop on Black Friday
    • 22% plan to shop during the weekend after Thanksgiving
    • 4% plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day


Ebola and Other Travel Concerns

  • 96% said that news of the Ebola outbreak has not affected their Thanksgiving travel plans
  • Of the 4% who say Ebola has affected their plans, 2% are not traveling, while another 2% have altered their itinerary


What travelers think are the most stressful parts of holiday travel:

  1. Congested traffic
  2. Crowded airports and long security lines
  3. Airline delays and cancelations
